Education

Karm Marg believes and recognizes the need for Basic Education as imperative to achieving long-term goals for its children. This is done in 5 ways: formal education in schools, education through open schooling, non-formal education, education for children with special needs and knowledge based learning.

A majority of children, about 40, attend mainstream day schools. In addition they get extra coaching at the home after school, which focuses on enhancing their knowledge of the subjects and is not limited by the institutional curriculum. Young adults who do not feel comfortable starting primary school at their age are provided specialized coaching at the home according to the distance education curriculum of the National Open School, and appear in the board’s routine examinations. Some children who categorically refuse to attend school are put through a relatively less structured system of non-formal education at the home. Children with special needs attend a special school that caters to their specific learning needs. Mukti Foundation, UK, funds most of the educational activities. The Rug Company, UK, supports education for children with special needs.

In 2005 Karm Marg in collaboration and with financial support from Room to Read, USA, started a program for computer based learning. At the home, there is a fully equipped computer room where children learn and play through the medium of computers.

In 2006, Karm Marg pooled some of its resources, and along with the support of its friends, started a small library as a knowledge resource for the children and visitors on a variety of topics.
